Marcelo Maldonado’s journey from Guatemala to becoming a very involved member in local politics is a testament to the opportunities offered by Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). As a high school student, Marcelo took advantage of dual enrollment courses, setting the stage for his success at NOVA’s Manassas campus, where he is pursuing a degree in political science. His first year at NOVA was marked by an internship with Senator Tim Kaine, a chance made possible by the college’s flexible scheduling. This experience proved significant, leading him to his current role as a full-time campaign manager for Dream in Nova, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Latino families in Northern Virginia through education equity, workforce development, and community collaboration. In addition to his role at Dream in Nova, Maldonado serves on the organization’s board.

Maldonado credits the college with allowing him to advance his political career in the area and embraces its supportive environment. “NOVA taught me to Stop At Nothing and to dream and achieve more,” he said. His positive experience extends to the faculty and staff, including Manassas Provost Molly Lynch and Diana Brown, whom he thanks for believing in him and their unconditional support.

For high school graduates contemplating their next steps, Marcelo offers a reassuring message: “It’s okay if your path is different from your friends. NOVA can be a fantastic opportunity and provide the support you need.” Looking ahead, Marcelo plans to transfer to an Ivy League institution, or perhaps a top university in Washington, D.C., or Virginia. His long-term goal is to attend law school and pursue a career in politics, government, and public policy. Will you help us support students like Marcerlo?

Bolivia’s journey from an ESL student to an accomplished graduate of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) exemplifies the power of education to transform lives. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the belief that investing in one’s education is the key to unlocking new opportunities, both personally and professionally.

Originally from La Paz, Bolivia, she arrived in the United States in 2008, eager to start a new chapter. At first, the language barrier was challenging, so Bolivia enrolled in NOVA’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program. She fondly recalls how the supportive environment at NOVA helped her overcome the difficulties of adapting to a new culture and language. “It wasn’t easy at first, but the resources at NOVA helped me feel like I was part of a community, not just a student,” Bolivia shared.

As she worked hard to improve her English skills, Bolivia’s focus expanded to include more than just language. She began taking courses in Business Administration and Administration of Justice, eventually earning two associate degrees and multiple certificates in Business Management and National Security between 2014 and 2017. The experience taught her invaluable life skills, from organizational strategies to time management and self-care. “Balancing my academic workload with family and work responsibilities was challenging, but it made me stronger,” Bolivia said. “It taught me how to prioritize and stay focused, which helped me succeed not just in school, but in life.”

Bolivia’s journey at NOVA was also marked by her commitment to fully utilizing the college’s facilities and support services. From the study spaces at the Annandale campus to taking accounting and math courses at the Alexandria and Arlington campuses, she made the most of every opportunity to enhance her education. She particularly appreciated NOVA’s ability to guide students through the transfer process, which helped her make informed decisions about continuing her education at a four-year university, such as George Mason University.

“NOVA doesn’t just provide education; it provides the tools to succeed beyond the classroom,” Bolivia said. “I learned to navigate the complexities of transferring credits, and the staff was always there to help me with advice and guidance.”

One of Bolivia’s most valuable pieces of advice for anyone considering NOVA is to take the time to explore its resources and embrace the opportunities that come with them. “The campus is full of resources that can make a huge difference in your journey,” she said. “I spent many hours in the cafeteria, studying from early in the morning until late at night, but I never felt alone. There was always someone to help, whether it was a professor, a tutor, or a fellow student.”

Her experience at NOVA wasn’t just about earning degrees; it was about growth. Bolivia learned the importance of investing in education as a means to build a better future, both for herself and for her family. “Going back to school as an adult was a big step, but it was worth every moment. Education doesn’t just open doors for your career, it opens doors for your entire life,” she shared.

Bolivia’s story is not only a testament to her own perseverance but also to the supportive, inclusive environment that NOVA offers. Her journey was made possible through scholarships and grants that helped ease the financial burden, and she is now committed to helping others in her community access the same opportunities. “I’m grateful for everything NOVA has given me, and I want to pass that forward,” she said. Bolivia plans to share information about NOVA’s scholarships with the clients she serves, especially single parents, who can benefit from the college’s support and flexibility.

As a proud graduate, Bolivia is also actively involved in promoting NOVA’s resources to those who might be hesitant to return to school. “I encourage everyone to take that first step. Don’t let fear hold you back. The opportunities at NOVA are endless, and the support is there every step of the way.”

Her advice to future students is simple but powerful: “If you’re thinking about going back to school, just do it. NOVA will give you the foundation you need to succeed. You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.”
