Marcelo Maldonado’s journey from Guatemala to becoming a very involved member in local politics is a testament to the opportunities offered by Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). As a high school student, Marcelo took advantage of dual enrollment courses, setting the stage for his success at NOVA’s Manassas campus, where he is pursuing a degree in political science. His first year at NOVA was marked by an internship with Senator Tim Kaine, a chance made possible by the college’s flexible scheduling. This experience proved significant, leading him to his current role as a full-time campaign manager for Dream in Nova, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Latino families in Northern Virginia through education equity, workforce development, and community collaboration. In addition to his role at Dream in Nova, Maldonado serves on the organization’s board. 

Maldonado credits the college with allowing him to advance his political career in the area and embraces its supportive environment. “NOVA taught me to Stop At Nothing and to dream and achieve more,” he said. His positive experience extends to the faculty and staff, including Manassas Provost Molly Lynch and Diana Brown, whom he thanks for believing in him and their unconditional support. 

For high school graduates contemplating their next steps, Marcelo offers a reassuring message: “It’s okay if your path is different from your friends. NOVA can be a fantastic opportunity and provide the support you need.” Looking ahead, Marcelo plans to transfer to an Ivy League institution, or perhaps a top university in Washington, D.C., or Virginia.
