Building a Future Through Leadership and Opportunity
From the beginning, Derrick looked for ways to stay engaged beyond the classroom. His involvement soon expanded into student government, where he served first as a senator and later as Student Government Association president. In these roles, he helped lead advocacy efforts that reached far beyond campus, including a trip to Capitol Hill to speak with policymakers about Pell Grants and student access to education.
Alongside his leadership work, Derrick studied cybersecurity and built experience in IT, preparing for a transfer to George Mason University. He also participated in professional development programs at NOVA that strengthened both his technical and soft skills, helping him prepare for competitive opportunities in the workforce.
One of the defining motivations in Derrick’s journey has been his personal story. Becoming a father at a young age pushed him to take his education seriously and focus on creating long-term stability for his family. That sense of purpose carried through everything he did at NOVA, from academics to leadership to advocacy.
Through NOVA, Derrick also found opportunities he never expected. He spoke at major campus events, including Fall Convocation, and represented students in conversations about access, equity, and funding. These experiences reinforced his belief that students thrive when they fully engage with everything the college has to offer.
“To the donors who support NOVA students, thank you. Your generosity makes a real difference for students like me who are working hard to build a future while balancing school, work, and family responsibilities. These scholarships and opportunities don’t just ease financial stress, they make it possible for us to stay focused, get involved, and pursue our goals with confidence. You’re not just funding an education; you’re investing in someone’s potential and future.”
For Derrick, NOVA was not just a place to earn credits, it was a place to grow as a leader, a professional, and a person.
“NOVA gave me the space to grow into the person I was meant to become,” he says. “And I’m just getting started.”
